8-week Mindfulness Course

Online 8-Week Mindfulness For Life Course

Mindfulness is needed now more than ever.  With the current financial and health uncertainties, isolation and social distancing, it is so important to take notice and care for yourself.  Mindfulness teaches you to steady yourself and train your mind away from persistent, worrying and unhelpful events and focus on the here and now.  It keeps you balanced and healthy in a time of uncertainty and strain.

With so many people needing to continue self-isolation and the likely continuation of social distancing, Simply Mindfulness will run the autumn 8-Week Mindfulness For Life Course online.  This course was developed by Oxford University Mindfulness Centre to teach the 8-Week Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy course outside of the clinical environment to anyone who is interested in learning a different way of living to support their wellbeing.  More can be learned about mindfulness here:  What is Mindfulness?

The online course will held for 8-10 participants on Zoom to allow for the opportunity to interact, or you can simply listen in from the comfort of your home.   All sessions will be taught by Debbie Larson, occupational therapist and mindfulness teacher.  Each week will include a 30 minute mindfulness practice followed by 50 minutes of interactive instruction and conclude with another 10 minute practice.  30 minutes of daily home practice will be suggested, to do between sessions, with access to online audio guidance.  Throughout the course, you will gain knowledge and a sense of calm.  Establishing a home practice will help you to maintain this sense of wellbeing into the future.

Mindfulness is not for everyone. If you are experiencing extreme difficulty or are in the midst of a major mental illness, it is not the right time to learn mindfulness. Mindfulness is a skill to keep you well and does not replace medical care or one to one therapy. Please contact the organiser or your GP if you have any concerns.

If you would like to learn more before signing up for this course, please watch the Free What is Mindfulness Video on YouTube. This will give you an idea if mindfulness is for you.

What do I need?

You will need to download the free app Zoom onto any device (tablet, phone, laptop, desktop computer).  Once you register, you will receive an e-mail with a link to the on-line meeting with a reminder e-mail just before the event.  Just click on the link and it will take you straight to the meeting.   The mindfulness practice can be done lying down or sitting.  It might be nice to have a quiet space, but it’s amazing how effective headphones are to help keep you focussed in a busy room.  Better yet, involve your partner and children if they are around.  Week 3 will involve some gentle movement on the spot.  Week 4 includes mindful walking in a space where you can pace about 5-10 steps.  You will receive a course manual in the post to support your learning.

Will other people see or hear me?

You can have your video and audio link on or off depending on your preference.  You can contribute comments or questions throughout on a chat function to just the presenter, or for everyone to see.  Chat will be encouraged at certain points about specific topics.

Are the sessions recorded?

Yes, the recorded sessions will be available for a participant to view should they not be able to attend a session and potentially shared with the teacher’s supervisor to ensure good practice guidelines are being met.  The recordings will not be made available to anyone else.  Permission for recording will be sought from each course participant.

What happens if I miss a session?

Ideally you will be available for all of the sessions.  In the unusual situation you are not able to view the session live, the recording will be made available.  This will be offered for a maximum of 2 sessions per person.

Will I get homework?

Yes.  Each week you will receive a different home practice to do daily.  These can be accessed through the the Simply Mindfulness YouTube channel that you can subscribe to for free.  You will also be sent an online document before each session summarising the content to be covered each week.  Some weeks will include a worksheet to note events you encounter.  These are meant to help integrate mindfulness into your everyday life.  They are not mandatory and no one will check that it has been done.

What people say:

“Having been a bit sceptical about the whole idea of mindfulness, thinking it was something airy-fairy and hippyish, I have had my opinion completely changed since taking the 8 week course.  I now actually think everyone should do the course whether they are young, old, stressed or content with their lot.  It’s helped me understand how my mind works and how I can have more control, be more ‘mindful’ in effect, over my mind and my approach to life itself.  It’s left me calmer, happier and better equipped to handle everything that life throws at you.”
