8-week Mindfulness Course

Online 8-Week Mindfulness For Life Course

Mindfulness is needed now more than ever.  With the current financial and health uncertainties, isolation and social distancing, it is so important to take notice and care for yourself.  Mindfulness teaches you to steady yourself and train your mind away from persistent, worrying and unhelpful events and focus on the here and now.  It keeps you balanced and healthy in a time of uncertainty and strain.  Due to the continued need for social distancing and the success of the previous online course, Simply Mindfulness will run the autumn 8-Week Mindfulness For Life Course online again.

the 8-Week Mindfulness for Life course was developed by the Oxford University Mindfulness Centre to teach the 8-Week Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy course outside of the clinical environment to anyone who is interested in learning a different way of living to support their wellbeing.  More can be learned about mindfulness here:  What is Mindfulness?

The online course will held for a maximum of 12 participants on Zoom.  To experience the benefits of being part of a group, you are encouraged to keep your camera on and given the opportunity to share your experiences of mindfulness in the larger group and in small break-out groups.  There is no need to discuss anything you are not comfortable sharing.  Discussions are structured around the experience of learning mindfulness.   All sessions will be taught by Debbie Larson, occupational therapist and mindfulness teacher.  Each week will include a 30 minute mindfulness practice followed by 45 minutes of interactive instruction and conclude with another 10 minute practice.  30 minutes of daily home practice will be suggested, to do between sessions, with access to online audio guidance.   Establishing a home practice will help you to develop a greater sense of wellbeing and the skill to maintain it beyond the course.

Mindfulness is not for everyone. If you are experiencing extreme difficulty or are in the midst of a major mental illness, it is not the right time to learn mindfulness. Mindfulness is a skill to keep you well and does not replace medical care or one to one therapy.  Please contact the organiser or your GP if you have any concerns.

If you would like to learn more before signing up for this course, watch the Free What is Mindfulness Video on YouTube. This will give you an idea if mindfulness is for you.

What do I need?

You will need to download the free app Zoom onto the device you intend to join the course with.  You do not need a Zoom account to join the live sessions.  Preferably, you can use a laptop or computer as they tend to have better connectivity, however a tablet or phone can be used.  Ideally you will be able to join the classes from a room that you can be alone in.  However, if this is not possible, please use headphones so others in your area cannot listen in.  This is to protect the privacy of the other members in the course.   The mindfulness practices can be done lying down or sitting.  You might like an upright chair (eg. kitchen chair) for sitting practices or a mat or rug on the floor for lying down practices.   Have blankets and cushions handy to help you feel comfortable.  Week 3 will involve some gentle movement on the spot.  Week 4 includes mindful walking in a space where you can pace about 5-10 steps.  You will receive a course manual in the post.

Will other people see or hear me?

Yes.  Think of this as an in-person class with much of the same conventions.  Just as you would be visible during an in-person course, you will be visible online in this course too.

Are the sessions recorded?

A certificate of attendance will be given if you’ve attended a minimum of 7 of the 8 live classes.

Missing a Class

There is no obligation to make up a missed class, unless you would like to receive a certificate of attendance.  However, if you would like to make up a miss class, this can be arranged for an additional cost of £50.

Will I get homework?

Yes.  Each week you will receive a different home practice to do daily.  These can be accessed through the the Simply Mindfulness YouTube channel that you can subscribe to for free.   Some weeks will include a worksheet to note events you encounter.  These are meant to help integrate mindfulness into your everyday life.  They are not mandatory and no one will check that it has been done.

What people say:

“Having been a bit sceptical about the whole idea of mindfulness, thinking it was something airy-fairy and hippyish, I have had my opinion completely changed since taking the 8 week course.  I now actually think everyone should do the course whether they are young, old, stressed or content with their lot.  It’s helped me understand how my mind works and how I can have more control, be more ‘mindful’ in effect, over my mind and my approach to life itself.  It’s left me calmer, happier and better equipped to handle everything that life throws at you.”
